I’m an amateur musician who records for fun, maybe 6 hours a month. I come here for feedback from people who use recording gear every day (or more often than I do), to narrow down what I would like to purchase. I have no way of trying out multiple pre’s, compressors, mic’s, etc. so I’m looking at these websites for guidance. It irritates me when the reply to some question is “if it sounds good to you it is good” or “on Tuesdays I like the color of Brand-X pre with the Brand-Z compressor, but on Wednesday’s I like the transparency of this pre with that compressor”. I’m sure I’m not alone with this frustration.

So after researching and basically flipping a coin I purchase gear based on faith. And even if I’m completely happy with my purchase I wonder if something else would have been just as good or better. And since I’ll never have the chance to hear it, I’ll never know.

Therefore, it would be great if people who use this gear everyday would list their favorite pieces (mic’s, pre’s, compressor, channel strip, plug in, interface, etc.) in a low (< $500), mid (< $1,000), and sky’s the limit price range. For example, in the low price range I would say some essential pieces are a SM57 and an RNC. Mid price a True P-Solo and AKG C-414. Sky’s the limit… well I’ve never been there. Any input would be appreciated.

Are you looking for suggestions on a specific upgrade?

Everyone is going to have different likes/dislikes/tastes, but for the most part, there are usually a few "typical" pieces people can lean towards in any given situation (then its down a choice between those pieces).

If you are looking for a suggestion, let us know what you currently have, and what you are thinking about upgrading.

I would like people to respond about what their favorite gear is. For example, what is you favorite mic, mic-pre, compressor, channel strip, etc. in the different price ranges I provided.

It's like cars, boats and airplane: pure subjective preference.

Making a list of what I like means nothing to YOU and vice-versa....

Too many people just follow the trends instead of making up their own minds.
You know, like sheep.....
