So I'm looking to transfer audio from a old cassette portastudio to my laptop (w/ windows xp), but I don't have a line in.

I'm considering buying either the Edirol UA-1EX or the griffin imic to do the job. Just looking for some advice in order to make the choice (quality, etc) and to get validation that these are the appropriate products. Thanks.

Something like that should work. You are on the right track. One thing you might consider, if your portastudio can supply an individual output for all four tracks simultaneously, is an audio interface with four inputs.
