Depending on where you are, and if you're well rehearsed and can get your tracks done in one or two takes, you might be suprised that there might be a project studio near you that can do what you want for $500 or less.

I am interested in purchasing a four track because i do not have the time to do recordings outside of the home. I want to learn how to use a four track because I need to work around my hectic schedule, a studio will do me no good. Thanks anyway.

Hmmm... this may not help either, but is $500 your whole recording budget? If so, do you already have mics, preamps, compressors, a mixing board, a CD burner or mixdown deck, reverb and other effects etc. etc...? What is the purpose of the demo? [i.e. is it a songwriting demo for publishing, artist demo for a lable, performance demo to get gigs...] If you don't already have a lot of the gear, maybe you should go a different route. If you have a computer, you can get a couple of decent mikes (like an SM58 and a Studio Projects C1, or an ADK or Rode condenser) and a pre-amp like the VTB-1 - then do your recording to a free or entry level piece of recording software - something which gives you EQ, compression, reverb, effects etc. Before you buy anything, however, pick up a book like Home Recording for Musicians. It helps to know what you're getting yourself in for. If you don't have time to go into a studio, where the heck are you going to get the time to become a recording engineer?:D
