Did you talk to tech support on the phone or email? You'll have to call em in Boston and get them to work you through it.

Additionally, what software are you running and which OS (9 or X)? If you've got an OSX application, I don't believe the 896 has an OSX driver yet.

I'm running it on 9.2.2 and I use cubase. I've tried calling tech support a billion times but its always busy and they haven't replied to any of my emails.

From the Control Panels, choose "Sound". On the Input or Output, you should have the option of the 896 or MAS.
Have you installed any other software recently?
Have you tried reinstalling the MOTU drivers?
Here's a shot in the dark. In the extension manager, disable the OS9.2.2 audio extensions.
Let us know where you are with this and I hope we can get some help for you.

I haven't installed any new software, and I've tried re-installing the motu drivers and the 896 still won't read. I know it's not a problem with the firewire ports because I can still daisy chain other firewire devices through the 896. Another wierd things is that when I try to start the computer with the 896 on the computer won't start, not until I turn offf the MOTU will the computer boot-up, so I don't know what to make of that.

So you've gotten it to work in the past on this exact same system, and one day it just stopped working?
If you've never gotten it to work correctly, the reason is because of the type of firewire card that you are using. MOTU 896 is NOT compatible with all firewire cards.

That's not the issue, I don't believe. In extension manager, turn off the Authoring Support, FireWire Authoring Support and USB Authoring Support.
If that doesn't do the trick, I wouldn't be suprised if the 896 is bad. Do you have any other FW devices that you use to make sure the FW ports work? How about the Apple Hardware Test CD, have you tried that?
