What kind of monitor speakers are good.

I'm currently using a cheap stereo for monitors
but they just don't cut it.

I'm looking for a good value on
something that still maintains a modicum of accuracy.

Are powered speakers better than an amp and passive
speakers?

What is the most popular set up?

I have 1.4 gig Athlon woth 1 gig of ram and 180 gig of hard drive
