i was hangin out in this online 3d community for Queen (big UK rock fan here) and they had some songs playing from their new album Cosmos Rocks on there and they sounded pretty darn crips.. unfortunately crisper than my stuff sounds when I compress down into mp3s.. I was wondering what could be a more suitable format to upload stuff or if you give the website a listen to see if you think those are mp3s or not.. who knows you might even like the site haha

A higher sample rate for an MP3 might help (256, mayhaps). However, there are some better formats (lossless are best). Apple's AAC (.m4v, I think) is one I don't have too much of a problem with.

Google for your answer, and I think you'll have some good hits.

Good luck! Maybe you'll even learn something more about audio...I always enjoy that.

i think you meant "bit rate". ;)

Without getting into a huge discussion on how mp3 encoders work, remember that the higher frequency information is often put into much lower priority (bit-wise) by the quantizing and coding stage. Granted, its based on the bit rate, the surrounding material, the psychoacoustic model... but essentially, as the KBPS goes down, a greater and greater lo-pass effect is applied. At really "bad" mp3 (lke 96k), you can sometimes see everything above 10k getting axed. Granted, some of the information above that will (could) come through once in awhile, but that's based on the encoder having enough bits in that frame to get all that information in there.... blah blah blah

Lower KBPS = less highs (generally rule of thumb)

Higher KBPS, variable bit rate, different encoder, etc... could all help with this.

(although its not a widely used format, I think OGG vorbis sounds pretty good... Higher KBPS and VBR mp3s or AACs should sound better)
