My fellow musicians,

I am getting a little neurotic in this decision making process. I've been spending a lot of time doing web-research--manufacturer's sites, user's sites...I just finished reading the past threads here, which I've found to be the most helpful so far...but alas, I'm still undecided...such good arguments for both sides. I would appreciate your opinions (hoping you have the latest versions) on which program would be best for me and why...and also, if you hold a strong viewpoint, in general, why either program is better period.

I compose music in classical, electronic, and rock styles, with some crossover sometimes. I am putting together a studio at my house, pretty basic, personal composition/recording studio. I am operating from a Mac G4 Titanium Powerbook.
I have so far:

Emu Proteus 2500 (man this thing is cool)
Emu E5000 ultra
Kurtzweil keyboard
Event EZbus

I want to be able to

1. Compose stuff (or improvise tracks) on midi and play it back with pleasing results (I use Finale a lot)

2. record audio/midi mixed songs

3. future aspiration-film scoring

So far these two programs seem to stand out as the best Audio/Midi sequencing programs for me. the threads I was reading were a bit dated, and some of the complaints may have been answered by updates. I seem to at the moment be a bit more intrigued by Logic and its long term possibilities and power though I am admitedly a bit apprehensive about its reputed "steep learning curve".

Most people seem to be happy with and more readily recommend DP 3.1.1 or whatever is the newest update. I don't have lists, but I always find it helpful to find out who of the "big guys" out there use each program, and I don't know about DP, but I know Peter Gabriel and the guy who produced the new McCartney album used logic, and they both sound great.

I have heard DP is slow operating and inconsistent with playback quality, or perhaps dissapointing in such. But it definitly seems to have the highest approval rating. I wouldn't mind a real user friendly program but would also be open to learning something more difficult initially if it proves to be more rewarding and powerful in the long run. The fact that Logic is now connected to Apple is somewhat comforting as a Mac user. Perhaps the interface will get easier. Maybe someone could explain these "enviroments" to me. I don't know anyone with logic, so I don't have the priviledge of trying it out though I may make a small journey in a couple of days to a store that does.

One other dilemna I have is I'm using this EZbus I just got, but it won't do midi unless its in OSX which is a major problem as I use finale all the time and have no other way of getting midi in and out. I'm considering sending it back. However, if I got Logic, i've heard they operate in OSX, so I would be able to do some midi.

I would much appreciate hearing the current opinions about the latest versions of the two programs and what you think would work best.

Sincerely,

Adam Cotton
