I'm using Windows XP with Cakewalk Sonar sequencing software and now need an interface of some kind to be able to play my guitar, bass and keys and sing and record it into my Sonar. I don't want to spend much, hopefully less than $250, to get started, and then be able to upgrade as time goes on. Any suggestions???

You might try the:

Delta 44 from M-Audio. It looks to be in your price range. You would have to run your mics through a Mixer to get them into the card. It does come bundled with DeltaLogic, but will work fine with any of the Cakewalk Variants.

For a better solution you'd have to pay a bit more...but you could go with something like the Aardvark DirectPro which has preamps and phantom power, or a Digidesign Mbox. both will run in the same ballpark on price and similar features. Both come with packed in software.

Do you guys offer that interface that has line and mic level inputs on it in a sort of multi-snake hanging off the back of it? I can't think of the brand.

Is this just an "upgrade" from using my "line in" from my mixer to pc?
I'm just learning this stuff so keep it simple, thanks.

Yes escricky, I"m wanting something that makes it easier to record into my sequencing software (Sonar). I seem to have problems just running thru my Line In on my soundcard, so I'm hoping to find something to make recording more simple.

If you are happy with the input quality but not the convenience of your setup, you could get a mixer with mic level and line level inputs. Just send what you want to your PC. If you are using something built in or something like a Sound Blaster, now's the time to upgrade. There are a few interfaces with real mic inputs.

Hey thanks TeeCee. Yes I am using a SoundBlaster sound card. I do have a Teac 4 channel analog mixer with line level outs but have not been able to get it to work very well with the sound card. So you are saying that getting something different than the Sound Blaster is the way to go???

There's no reason why the Teac shouldn't work with your Sound Blaster if it's a typical analog mixer (I'm not familiar with it). But when you get serious about quality, the Sound Blaster is going to be the weak link.

What's not working? That may need a new topic to get good responses from other board members.
