For some reason I can no longer access my ASIO multimedia drivers from Nuendo or Cubase sx. When I try to use the ASIO control panels to see why, it says the dll files won't load. Any ideas? Or where should the ASIO dlls drivers live so I can manually place them there? (win 2000 sp3) Tx, Rob.

I suggest you uninstall and reinstall your audio interface.

I had considered that, but in my tower I have a MOTU 2408, and an RME HAmmerfall 96/52. Both of which are still functioning properly. What has happened is in the device setup in Cubase, my options for mutitrack output drivers are 1) motu 2408 2)RME 96 series 3)RME 96/52 or 4) DIrectx. I used to have an option calle multimedia. The device panel that does not seem to be working seems to be a Steinberg one. But even installing Cubase again does not seem to have helped. I guess I will try to reinstall the cards though. Thanks:)

uninstall your software and drivers for your soundcard...then reinstall them and set them back up in your sequencers again.

Why in God's name would you even want to use MME drivers anyway? Those are class cards you have and I'm sure that the manufacturer provides a soundcard specific ASIO driver for them.

That's what YOU should be using. You'll get better latency, if the driver is well written and you will not have to handshake with Windows Multimedia, which is a longer trip around the block.

Also, have you checked Steinberg's site lately? There are Cubase SX upgrades that fix bugs that have been found in the initial release. The current release is 1.051. Download it and patch your Cubase SX. Also, remember: Both Nuendo and Cubase SX are now based on the same recording engine.

Sorry, i wasn't super clear about my intent with using the mme drivers. My studio is in a building 40 feet from my house. My home Cpu got parted out, so, I have been dragging my studio tower over to my home keyboard/monitor/mouse etc... Since my RME card is a digitalk only card and my MOTU is racked, I wanted to be able to use the on board audio card from the motherboard to be able to play back mixes so I can do some simple editing and formatting. This way I don't also have to haul over monitors, converters, amp etc... This also allows me to do some of the hours of repetitive tedious work that goes into a project without having to have a babysitter for my boy. And yes, I am aware that Cubase and Nuendo are VERY similar now, for some reason though, I like the interface in Cubase better. Just an issue of stupid cosmetics. And also, Cubase for me seems to run a little more stably. Not sure why this is, but oh well:) I did however find the driver problem. Somehow, when I uninstalled a previous version of Cubase it took the multimedia drivers for ALL my Steinberg programs with it. Even reinstalling SX or Nuendo didn't help. However, reinstalling Cubase 5 has it all working just peachy again. Thanks for the help though:)

I agree. Although I'm enjoying working with Cubase SX, I DO prefer the interface of Cubase 5. Overall, I would also agree that Cubase 5 appears to be more stable.

Cubase SX will get better. After all, it was written from the ground up and the new patch cleared up many bugs I'd found in the initial release.

Happy recording!

No, I meant I like Cubase SX better than Nuendo. MY SX has been running great:) I just had to reinstall Cubase 5 again also to keep the multimedia drivers. Not sure why, but oh well, it works

Ok. Are you up to version 1.0.5 of Cubase SX yet? I ran into some bugs in the initial release. I've since downloaded the patch from www.steinberg.net. Now, several of the bugs that I was experiencing are gone.

I was having a problem with VST System Link channels. It's been fixed in the patch.

I don't use the system link options, so I guess ti doesn't affect me yet then;)

You may still want to update. Or at least go to www.steinberg.net and read the "fix" list. Maybe there's something that you've not tried in SX yet that is on that list.

at last, i have stumbled upon the hidden cubase users thread...

it sounds like you have a similar setup to mine...a PC running windows XP and a MOTU 2408 MKIII. i used to use VST 5.0 but upon running that with windows XP i have had system crashes.

my question is mainly this: using the 424 card with a 2408 MKIII and cubase (XP or VST) did you have problems acquiring the sync on startup where it tests the ASIO connection? i was not able to do this successfully although audio actually plays?! anyone else have this issue?

always try to stick with the WDm or microsoft drivers. The proprietary drivers were made for hardware specific products. Now they are trying to be WDM drivers even thought that was not the original design. Always stick with Microsoft. That sounds sad but true!!

guitarjoe:

You neglected to mention a few things:

1. What soundcard are you using and who is the manufacturer?
2. Did anything happen that you can remember before your driver was rendered ineffective?
3. Had you installed anything else on your machine that could be playing bad with your audio application?

No, you cannot simply move dll files somewhere because they need to be registered in the windows registry. You can, however, go to the manufacturer's website and download the latest ASIO drivers for your soundcard and install them. When you do this, they will be correctly registered in the windows registry.

Another thing of note: I noticed you said you were running Win2k with SP3. There are well documented problems with that service pack, which raises another question: Were things working BEFORE you installed SP3?

I have three DAWs and two of them are on WIN2k SP2 and the other one is on WinXP Pro. I refuse to install SP3 on Win2K.

All problems were fixed months ago. When I uninstalled Cubase 5.0 it snagged some dll files with it. So, I just reinstalled it (since I have tons of hard drive space anyways) and everyhting has been solid for several months now:) I put about 60 hours a week on Cubase SX. I have not had even one crash now for almost 2 months:)

I'm running Cubase SX on Windows XP and Cubase VST Score on Windows 2000 Professional using VST System Link and V-Stack on another machine with Windows 2000 Professional and I'm having no problems.
