I am struggling with my extensions manager set on my imac. I'm using OS9.2 and have re-set to the ALL setting, but i keep getting a message every time i boot up regarding a 'USB unknown device'. I think this could be from a mis-installation.
Is there a list of exensions and any other settings to make before i get into recording with this thing. I am not mac savvy and this is drving me nuts trying to figure out all the correct set up info..is there a resource page for 'new home studio mac people'??@#.. who would like to return to their music:confused:

Do you have any USB devices plugged in besides the keyboard and a mouse? If you have a USB MIDI interface, and don't have the drivers installed, or enabled, than it's telling you it doesn't have the right drivers enabled.

If you set your estension set to OS9 ALL, then you only enabled Apple extensions. You need to go through the list and enable extensions for your MIDI devices, USB Audio devices, any extensions for OMS, Free MIDI, etc.

Let me know if you need more help.

C.

Cory. I have done everything you suggested. disabled all authoring extensions, speech, voice, ipod, nomad, rio extensions., usb extensions etc..
the message i am now getting upon bootup to OS 9.2 is:
"The software needed to use the USB device Apple Extended USB Keyboard cannot be found"
Any suggestions? I am completely lost here! Thanks for your time.
Simon

Many Thanks for that Cory. I will run through it all tonight and post back with the results. Really appreciate your help.
I didn't get my mac from sweetwater (i didn't think mac's were troublesome!)
But since i have bought this imac all i have had is problems - partly because i have never used one before for any length of time, so i am learning basic operations as i go along. I am learning though! In the meantime, thanks again for your helpful postings!

Not a problem.

For the 'general' user, one who's going to use a Mac as a consumer machine, right out of the box, with maybe MS Office, iApps, and anything that doesn't require third party hardware such as PhotoShop, it's pretty straight forward. Those of us who are using our Macs (and any computer for that fact) inevitably have to deal with extension conflicts, hardware issues, etc. Once you get your extensions set, you should be up and running in no time. I appologize if one of my earlier posts may have set you going the wrong way and you disabled more than you should.

If you come accross any error codes while you're working, please make a note of them. They will be helpful in diagnosing your problems in the future.

Looking forward to your reply.

OK, i have gone through the extensions with the people at Apple. Using my 'copied' set, from the original ALL setting, and got rid of that 'Apple Extended Keyboard' error. (Pheew!) Here then are the DIS-abled items in my Extensions Manager:

Speech Manager
All of the Set up Assistant 2.1.5
PPLibraryPPC
All in Palomar print list
All Voice
USB authoring
USB print
USB nomad's
USB Rio's
Nomad Jikebox
USB soundspace2
iPod
All Faxstf 6.0.8
Speech

..Cory, the Input Sprocket has been enabled the whole time i've had the computer, in both extension sets, so i don't think that was the one causing the problem. Thanks anyway. Main thing. The message has gone away, and when i get round to installing Pro Tools LE successfully!! I will post my settings (unless anyone out there can do me the favour first??)

One last thing..i do remember at the height of the frustration..trashing and deleting an extension!:scared:
I assume this was a mistake, and hope i don't regret it later, as i have no idea what it was i trashed from the HD...does the mac 'rebuild' extensions, similar to the way it rebuilds 'Preferences' if you trash those?
My reason for calling Apple was that my mouse seems to have a mind of it's own..for no reason, the arrow on the screen will 'flip' to the corner of the screen, usually the bottom left corner. I then have to go and get the arrow with the mouse and carry on. does anyone else have this problem with the optical pro mouse? It's gettin a little annoying. The Apple guy showed me how to reset the mouse settings, but it is still doing it.

Yeah those pesky extensions can really get ya man. It is best to use only what you need when recording digital audio DP is very picky it seems but it may be the plug ins too. make sure you know what youre turning off before you mess with things!!!

I have a question I have 1.5gb of ram in my dual800 how much should allocate to DP3 if I use around 28-32 tracks average???? Also in setting up my buffer setting/ disk settings should I change any of those to optimize things a bit????

I'm looking to get the most out of my Mac and DP3 and I think Im doing ok but if anyone out there has really made this machine scream so they can 128 tracks like Motu claims they did let me know (LOL).......I'd like to have room to spare on my CPU for other things......

Oh one other question I have.....Does anyone know why DP3 stops while playing back a song if I click the desktop..... (you know when finder shows at the top of the screen as the selected program?) it stops playing like I hit the stop button on transport??? this never happened to me before I did a clean install of 9.2.2.....it doesnt affect me but is annoying...

Thanks
