I'm not sure if it's NERO's fault- their cd burner software used to be top-notch for me- but after downloading updates from them in the last few months, EVERY CD I put in my pc plays slow.. like at half-time- and NERO also no longer burns CD's. From files, images, or other cds at all- just stops after 13% done and says "error, burn process failed". One thing I noticed in the error log is it says "disc fixated". I printed out the error log and sent it to NERO tech support last week and havent heard back yet. Are these two issues related? How can I get my CD's to play at normal speed again? ALL audio files in my computer play fine, wavs and mp3's - its just CDS that arent playing right- no matter what player I use (WMP, NERO player, etc)

thanks for any advice you could give

Check your DMA settings for your CD drive.

System Properties -> Hardware (tab) -> Device Manager -> IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers -> Primary IDE Channel (or Secondary).

Under the "Advanced Settings" tab make sure your transfer mode is not PIO.

All 3 of the primary IDE Channels were set to "DMA if available", one of the 3secondary IDE channels were set to PIO, under Device 0. I changed it to "DMA if avail", but underneath it still said the current transfer mode was PIO, even after rebooting. Under this Device 0, unlike the other ones it has the Auto Detection greyed out. So it’s not letting me change it.. I’ve never altered these settings in the past, are you sure that’s what would be causing it?

What you've described seems like a "textbook" PIO problem. Check out this Microsoft article: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/storage/IDE-DMA.mspx

To fix it, I recommend the "Alternative Method No.1" as described in this article: http://winhlp.com/node/10 as it's actually fairly easy to do and isn't very dangerous. (Well... if you're tech-savvy, that is)

Hope that helps,

thanks.. yeah, well at least half of my problem is solved.. I just deleted the secondary channel IDE that had PIO selected, then rebooted and windows automatically installed it again with DMA selected. So now my CD's play correctly but I still get write errors and resets occuring mid-burn, so I can't burn any CD's..my next step I guess is to just clean the drive with one of those disk cleaner cd's and then take it in to make sure it has the 80-pin and not the 40 pin cable.. I just want to solve this prob as quickly as possible and get a new drive if I need one! Ive already wasted 20 something CD's on this..

heres part of the error log

7:14:28 AM #26 CDR -1135 File Writer.cpp, Line 306
Write error
D: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-H552D

7:14:29 AM #27 Phase 38 File dlgbrnst.cpp, Line 1767
Burn process failed at 8x (1,200 KB/s)

Is there another burning software package you could try? this is just to isolate a software problem...

iTunes maybe? If you already have it, it's just a click away.

Try using the CD burning integrated into the XP shell.
Or use Windows Media Player or iTunes.

haha Im one of those musicians who doesnt have i-tunes, it's too much to keep up with and would distract from my making music..!

So I was able to burn CD's with WM player, I converted files to WM lossless and burned a couple different cd's and they played. Then I tried to burn those same files to CD in Nero and it also completed successfully- but then when I tried to copy a cd in Nero it gave a write error in the middle of it again. I even re-installed the most updated Nero software just a few days ago for the 2nd time. This blows, b/c Nero allowed me to make and copy cd's easily, and I was used to the software.. with WM player Im having to convert the files first. well, at least I know it wasn't my drive. Nero tech support was trying to say it was.. I guess I can still use the video editing features of Nero, those are pretty cool. If theres any people who are familiar with working through Nero software glitches please let me know ! And thanks a lot to you guys, this forums pretty awesome..

Try an older version or (if you don't have it already) a demo of the latest version (8, I think) to see if it's something particular to your version. Nero has always been my best bet -it's weird that you're experiencing such problems.

Be sure to contact their support as well!
