I have an onboard firewire port (TI chipset) that does not supply enough power to my interface. I installed the microsoft kb885222 update patch. The interface works fine, I just need to keep it plugged in to the AC.

I plan on installing a SIIG card to eliminate the problem and keep the interface powered without the AC. Here is my question- will the kb885222 update I installed apply to the new card when I put it in, or will I have to edit the registry? I have heard mixed answers on this. The purpose of the microsoft patch is to correct a problem with XP SP2 that slows the firewire speed to 100 from 400. Will my new card start out at 100 - even though I have the patch installed already?

Thanks!

I don't know what you mean when you say that the inbuilt 1394 doesn't supply enough power to your interface. Do you mean you have a 1394b 4-pin port that doesn't give you mains for the interface?

From the post, it would seem like you want to circumvent the problem by installing a 6-pin firewire port. I'd suggest you don't bother with that and keep your interface powered off AC. Laptop power is already contaminated with frequencies other than 60Hz so, which is pretty bad for audio purposes. Furthermore, you can't filter it with a power conditioner as you would a separate AC outlet. I think this whole idea of powering preamps from a laptop is just ridiculous and should be abolished anyway.

Rad,

Thanks for the reply. I am using a desktop with a 6 pin firewire. I didn't really explain it well - it won't boot (the interface) without the ac plugged in, but once it is booted, I can pull the ac and it runs fine. Kind of weird, but it won't boot with the computer power alone. I guess it may not be a power issue, but maybe the way the device is enumerated once the computer is started - I don't know.

Thanks!

This is odd. I'm wondering if it is an interface issue or a computer issue...
