So I have been asked if I'd like to record a POPS orchestra. The stage is a high school stage, and it's a group of Amateur musicians who are as good as larger more well known POPS. It's about 60-70 members, with a full orchestra (winds, strings, percussion) and I'd be recording them using a Digi 002r.

What kinds of ideas for placements would you recommend I give a whirl with? I can't use any of the school's gear, and I'd be brining all of mine over. I have a LD condenser, 2 smalls, and I believe I have a stereo mic, and a think a maybe one or two more.

Any ideas here?

if it was me.

I would x-y them in omni if possible. Also, if there is going to be any known soloists or a solo section closer micing them with a third mic to bring it up a few db wouldn't hurt. but I would over do the mciing.. i'd just try to find sweet spots and let the music speak for itself.... not tooo far away though you don't want it to be tooo roomy.

my two cents for what it's worth.

good luck!

With regards to your mics, what pickup patterns are we talking about here?

Everything but the LD is just an small cardaroid. The LD is switchable polar, Omni, figure 8, cardaroid, and small cardaroid.

Will you have a chance to sound check with the orchestra before hand?

I have a two-fold thought, you can do both an XY or ORTF cardioid in the center and also use an M/S rig. Capture all multi-channel and decide on which setup you liked better in post.
