Since Apple sort of sets the bar for the digital online distribution music platform, the inevitable totality of the fully-independent music industry's future, this can't be good for artists. I doubt indy artists on iTunes will see a penny of subscription revenue, but the labels get paid off. Meanwhile, Apple disrupts its own virtually-monopolized self-created market, just to push a few more iPhones.
I just hope that the subscription will only download songs to the iPhone and not copy them to your desktop library permanently. If it does, music will be like cable television.
The most pirated media online right now is television shows, 50% of all piracy, because everyone thinks TV shows are "free" with their cable access (and because adverts pay for the shows). They think they're paying for the access, not the content, so everyone believes TV shows have no monetary value. Just wait and see... same thing will happen to the entire music industry if Apple sets the standard to subscription.
Now is the only way to make money is to do live gigs, and your MP3's are really either a tip jar or a free giveaway on a mass scale to build your consumer base for your live shows? It's no longer about selling records... It's about selling concerts?
Some thoughts. What do you think?
