Hello!

I am buying some new monitors and have heard both of the mentioned speakers, I was blown away by the dyns and liked the sound of the jbl's as well but not quite as much.

I am aware of the benefits of the room compensation and have had a few colleagues use the jbl for alot of post production work with great reviews. I compose electronica mostly and do a bit of film work on the side (but want to do more) ....... my question to all you folks out there is how well do each of these monitors translate into the real world? I LOVE the sound of dyns and if anybody has used them (or the jbls) could you share your thoughts about how they translate to different settings (club, tv, hi-fi, ipod ect.) as I am worried about having a hyped up sound and then it sounding flat when my material is put out there....

Thanks very much

Well I've never listened to the BM6A's, but the BM5A's were a top contender in my hunt for monitors. For me it was the BM5A's vs. the JBL LSR4328's. If the two Dyn models are anything alike the BM6A's will have a much thicker bass response in a small room than the JBLs will.

Personally I'm a big fan of the Dynaudio's and the JBL's. I ended up picking the JBL's because I thought they gave a more accurate representation of rock guitar sounds (my instrument and a focus in most of the music I work with). It seemed to me that the mid-range on the JBL's was a little more true than the BM5A's. As well I felt like off-axis listening was a lot more consistent. Whereas on the Dynaudio's there was a pretty severe directionality to the high end and moving off-axis was like pulling down a shelving EQ, I didn't get that on the JBL's. I also felt like, at least in that room, that the BM5A's really enhanced the low end, but it was also not an optimal room.

So, that was my process there. I still consider buying a pair of BM5A's because I thought they sounded fantastic, but I got the impression they traded a little bit of accuracy for flattery. They seemed to have their own sound. I have been exceptionally happy with my JBL's (clients think the lights are cool too), but have no doubts that I'd be perhaps equally happy with the Dynaudio's. They are both fantastic sets of monitors.

I have found the JBL's to translate quite nicely, though you will definitely want to watch your placement in the room otherwise you'll make the same mistake I did at first and put WAY too much bass in the mix. The mids to the highs translated, even in very sub-optimal environments (like a laundry room) very very well.

thanks very much, I will take that into consideration. Looks like the JBLs might be the best to go with for accuracy - but for inspiration whilst composing.... still the dyns. Got to decide for myself.
