hello,

im looking to get an external HDD for my backup.
ive had some seriously bad experience with HDD failure and performance in the past, ive sticked with internal HDD with SATA and such since then. in the near future, im planing to have it run RAID as well.

any suggestions?

thanks!

I would recommend Glyph. They're built like tanks and I never had a failure.

We have two Acomdata drives at home for backup. Small, nice & beefy metal case and comes with a version of Retrospect backup software and both USB 2.0 and Firewire interfaces. Bought both at Fry's. Maybe hard to find, though. Or, go with a Western Digital or Seagate unit.

thanks for the replies!

ive always thought that Glyph made their products way over priced, i cant seem to grasp the reason why...on the other hand, as far as afford ability, i think AcomData is an affordable choice.

thanks!

The various Glyphs that I use (and, BTW, one of their GTKey drives just failed after very minimal use over a 2.5 year period) are typically 'tweaked' Seagates. IIRC, the tweaks are for real-time audio - certainly, not required for backup applications

Glyph also offers a nice warranty and free data recovery:

I think I'm testing their warranty theory right now; however, it's been over a month since I brought the GTKey080 into Todd that one day I ran the test on the MOTU stuff over at your place.

Try http://www.diskemergency.com where you recover your data easily. You just submit your problem online and get the job done in short time.

LaCie makes some nice drives. You can get a number of externals that come pre-raided as a RAID 0 and you could redo them as RAID I. They cost about as much as two externals, and therefore you are making life easier on yourself by having it be one unit. The problem is bandwidth, you'll want it to be firewire at the least, preferablly FW 800.

Of course, you could always just do two drives. Newegg is a good place to shop for that.
