Can someone tell me why I would want Nuendo instead of Cubase SX? I hear that Nuendo is better at audio overall, but no one ever says why or how. I think SX looks pretty cool from the demo, and at a cheaper price than nuendo, I am liking it more. I realize Nuendo can do a bit with movies, but that is not a concern of mine.

I do rock music mostly and need a good all-in-one program.

yeah I like Cubase SX also. Even though they look just alike. Nuendo really from what I have heard from others is good for movies, but if you just do music. I think SX will do

I guess I don't get it. SX looks pretty much identical to Neundo, has better midi & costs less. And it's coming out in OSX. What am I missing?

Beyond all of this, Cubase SX was developed with Nuendo as its base and it *does* do video. It supports SMPTE as well as digital video tracks that you can use just like audio tracks. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that Nuendo has a (though you have to get it seperately) dolby digital encoder plugin. Now, Cubase SX will do surround sound mixing and effects, but it has no direct way to encode. A friend of mine has a copy of Nuendo, maybe I'll play around with it and compare notes (I use SX).

A cursory glance at Nuendo gives me this...

1. Imports and exports galore in Nuendo:
Imports:
Audiofile
AudioCD
Videofile
Audio from Videofile
OMF
OpenTL
Premier Generic EDL
Cubase Song
Midi File
It will export in most of those formats

2. The sync end of things seemed to be more complete (though that may be my imagination as I didn't have them side by side... it just seemed more complete than I remembered from my SX settings)

3. It seems to look a bit more visually professional. Of course, that's personal opinion.

I'd basically say you're paying the extra $250 for your ability to handle video's slightly better and EDL, OMF, and OpenTL support. Other than that, they're the same package with a mildly different visual theme. Though, I might add that it's quite possible I missed something major in the sort time I messed with it.

The more I look at the two, the more I think that perhaps it should be "Nuendo AND Cubase" rather than "Nuendo vs. Cubase". Cubase seems to be oriented towards the composing/recording/sequencing. Nuendo, however, is all out mastering/post production/media. Now... if only Nuendo had included a few of the Cubase features (such as MIDI scoring) it would be the ultimate, but as is... there are certain things you'd want Cubase for and certain you'd want Nuendo for.

If you intend to mostly compose/record/sequence... go with Cubase SX

If you intend to master (specifically in surround sound)/produce/and do video related media... go with Nuendo

Wow -- thanks for the comprehensive look. I'm buying a G4 and interested in the usual suspects: DP3, PTLE, Logic, Cubase SX, Nuendo, so this is helpful stuff.
