I bought a Seagate external drive, 9.1 G. It has never been initialized, so my Mac says that it needs a low-level initialization. However, I'm using a PPC 8100/80, OS 8.1 and every time I try to initialize this drive it says that my system cannot deal with a volume of this size. I'm using DriveSetup 1.7.3, and it will not allow me to partition the drive. I have initialized an identical drive using this utility in the past. The only difference was that that drive already had data on it. What do I need to get this new drive to initialize?

Any reason why you haven't updated to 8.6? Anyway, you can format it in OS9 and it should work back in 8.1 as long as you don't format it 'extended'. It may have been formated Extended from the reseller and that's why OS8.1 can't recognize it.
Do you have access to 9.1? or even an update to 8.6? Just wondering why you're still using 8.1?
Hope it helps.

I still use 8.1 because it works fine for what I do with this machine. I'm a firm believer in, "If something works, don't fix it." Heck, I still use 7.5.3 on another Mac for audio because SD II won't run under system 8.
Thanx for your help. i'll try to find somebody with system 9.

Hey,
I did some reading at Apple after my post last night. If you have your 8.1 Installation CD, you can startup off the CD and try to format the drive. Have you attempted that yet?
