Who here has finished a mix and said, "Wow, I did it". Is this how all your recordings are? Who has made a recording and thought, "that's not too bad, but it still is lacking something". Anybody have anything they are sure could be a hit?
I have made many recording where I have thought I did a good job and the sound quality and mix was up to par, but yet the music was lacking in style and taste. I am still looking for the right band and artists that make me proud to be an engineer. My mixing and recording skills have been progressing over the last 5 years and I am excited for when the time finally comes that I meet up with the right people and we stumble on to something that we know is special.

Holickpro,
I'm going to speculate that most,or no one quite understands what it is you are asking.Do you seek to gain more knowlege/skills and/or upgrade equipment to reach a mix that reaches what you consider to be up to par?
Are you perhaps scouting around for people that have more style and taste?
Your questions are very vague & incredibly subjective & it seems that this is a topic that would be more appropriate for the Chit Chat forum.
But then again,a few weeks back, someone submitted a question about an Avril Lavigne song which was by far,the most irrelavent topic I had ever seen in this forum,of which had actually recieved a few responses-which I will never understand.
It's a really a big hit or miss with this forum,as sometimes it's just dead cyberspace,or you may stir up a cataclysmic storm of responses and exchanges.

I love my job, I get to write music all the time. Now there are just some songs and mixes that come together so easy and just fit, I don't have to fight the mix or anything. But then there are other songs I produce that I just seem to have a hard time getting to gel. I sure love those easy ones.
Sometimes more or less its the sounds themselves fighting, and usually i selected a certain sound for a reason, so I don't want to get rid of it, but I have to fight for it to place in the mix well and still have a good sounding song.
But as with anything, it all starts with the source, good song producing, good sounds....

I am sorry for the miscommunication. Perhaps this post should be moved to a more appropriate forum. I think I am at the wrong forum anyways. I am looking for a group of experienced, friendly people to discuss the art of recording and mixing.
I was simply looking for someone to share thier experience with recording music. Nothing about gear. Discussion about gear is good and all if you are looking to buy new gear, but people think music is about gear. I believe knowing how to use what you got is more important than what you got.
I have made decent recordings, but I always feel like they could be better. Maybe I'm just a perfectionist. I am looking to make a recording, where all the tones on every instrument are breathtaking. The kind that make you get lost in the music and say "wow this is truly the best music I have ever heard". I always catch myself settling for tones that are good, but not great, because I haven't had the opportunity to record someone whos music (style and taste) would be worthy of the work I put into the sound. Has anyone here had that opportunity? Has anyone recorded anything that made them say, "wow".

BTW - I'm not looking for advice. Just looking to share experiences. :)

No worries, you are fine posting in this particuliar place dude.
What didn't you like about your recordings? What kind of music do you do, and do you have any website with your music? Would love to hear it.
You know sometimes I actually like hearing recordings where there are mistakes and humaness to them, makes me feel better I guess :D

I love scouring this forum for these kind of thought provoking questions . Recently and miraculously one of my projects landed in the lap of the late arif mardin and he was kind in his critiques . This particular home recording project was not a masterpiece of production or composition but the arrangements and performances were strong enough to hold even this masters attention . . . I think we dwell in the intuitive and we base our decisions on our experiences . For me I tend to try to eliminate obvious flaws . Maybe thin an arrangement to allow the more important elements to break through . . or maybe the opposite happens and I build upon or strengthen an existing motif . In recording the same applies . . . eliminate distracting artifacts such as noise or offensive frequencies . . . or selectively and intuitively enhancing parts with eq . There are indeed different tools and we learn by practicing the trade . It would be like most other skills at some point we exceed the sum of the parts and break through to a new level . . . xxit happens . It also appears that my own personal benchmarks seem to be of a fluid nature and there is an ebb and flow to my creative juices . What might be a bit purplexing is we never quite realize just exactly where we reside on this crazy scale of expertise . Does it really matter as long as we are growing . . .? yes I would also love to hear from people about their more or less abstract points of view and will anticipate maybe even hearing creative music from all my buddies who frequent this forum . . . . bobby

Holickpro,
There is no need to apologize and I did not intend to be unfriendly or imply that anyone here is unfriendly, but I remember you posting this same thread a while ago,and I was just pointing out that for whatever reason-some posts do not get responses sometimes and it may or may not have anything to do with a particular topic.I just thought perhaps that your thread might have been recieved better in the Chit Chat forum, but obviously now,it sparked some feedback, fortunately.
There are times myself, where I second guess my own postings.
