I'm getting prepared for recording an acoustic guitar pass to a song that is fairly steady in its ryhthm and its relation in context to the rest of the song (Rock/Alternative). The acoustic enviroment that I'm working in is about that of an All American Residential Living Room. The Mic Pres are the on-board Mackie Onyx Mic Pres and on-board Digidesign 002 Rack (Focusrite). I have a Martin Acoustic Guitar, new strings and good intonation. Can somebody recommend a choice in mics for my scenario? Thanks, Rob

are you buying new mics? if so what is your budget. I like to record with a small diaphram and a large diaphram, so depending on your answer, will send some recommendations your way.

Yeah a little more information would be helpful. What other instruments will be in the mix? Alot of rock acoustic guitars sound pretty good direct in, although I think I would mic it too just for an added bonus in different tones if you want or need them. Any two condensers will do in my opinion.

I would never record an acoustic guitar using a DI. I've never heard an acoustic/electric that actually sounded good when compared to a miked acoustic guitar. One option that I love on acoustic guitar is a pair of NT5's. They sound great and don't break the bank. If you need a bit more bottom end, change out one of the NT5's for a large diaphragm. I always like miking up my acoustic with a stereo pair. I've had good results just putting a single condenser on it as well. The MA200 actually worked very well for me on a few tracks for acoustic guitar.

Yes I agree that this mind set is conventional. There are however some fairly note worthy exceptions.
Craig Chaquico has made a Grammy award winning career out of direct acoustic guitars sounds. He's often quoted as attributing his unique and beautiful guitar sounds to traditional DI methods.
Perhaps not for everyone but a great sound none the less.
