I'm in a band that is in the process of building a studio. It's nothing huge, just something that we can run ideas through and hopefully, when we know what we're doing, put out some songs on.

Here is a list of what we have thus far:
- iMac 24"
- Digi 003 rack
- Yamaha HS80's
- Beta 52 (kick)
- A couple of SM58's

This is what we're looking at:
- Presonus digimax
- Vintech 1272 or UA 2-610
- Audix D2 and D4 drum mics
- Rode NT5 Stereo (overhead)
- Shure SM57 (snare and guitar amp)
- Audio Technica pro 37 (hi-hat)
- Sennheiser 609 (guitar)
- 1 or 2 LDC for vocals

Questions:

1. Vintech or UA? We need something that good on vocals but also versatile for drums, bass, etc.

2. Audix mics any good? throughts

3. Need help with LDC mics. We were thinking of getting the Neumann 103, but don't think we want it anymore after reading reviews. What would be some LDC we should at.

Here is a link so you can hear our lead singers voice. It might help you help me with LDC choices:

I'm probably leaving stuff out. Let me know what you all think.

i would consider a pair of akg c414's. VERY versitale mic. 5 different polar patterns, pad, bass roll off. skip the nt5's. use the 414's for overheads, and vocals. personally, i love the UA 610. i only have one channel (la610), but i use it on everything. you can get grit to supper clean... i really want a second channel!

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the 414's would be very nice and i'd love to get some down the road, but i think for now it's a little outside of our budget to drop $2000 on a pair of those.

I think we're trying to stay under $7000 for this studio. I know it's not much, but we're trying to make the best out of it as we can.

I agree with you about the UA. We've recorded with the 2-610 and have liked the outcome. Has anyone worked with the Vintech 1272?

Thanks again.

Strange, I just did a search for SM57 and it showed it at $99. I think that price up there may be wrong

Thanks Foreverain4. So it looks like the 414 would be something of great benefit now instead of later. Those could be drum overheads and a good vocal mic right? I liked how you priced everything out. Very thoughtful.

Is the Digimax 96k really worth the extra $530 when compared to the Digimax LT? At least for what we're doing?

Looks the 2-610 is winning over the 1272.

Thanks for all the input thus far!

the full digimax has built in limiters, which will be very useful for recording drums. you also get higher sample rates (up to 96k), which does you no good for the 003 (003 is limited to 48k on the adat inputs), but could prove useful down the road. fwiw, you can record 96k with the spdif in on the 003. the digimax 96k comes standard with spdif out as well as adat out. so, you could have a total of 10 inputs on the 003 at 96k. i would go for the full digimax, if you can afford it, but the digimax lt would probably suit you fine.

some uses i have found for the c414
drum overheads (wide cardoid, or omni in a great room)
drum room mics (omni)
acoustic guitar
vocals
electric guitar room mic
bass guitar cabinet
saxaphone
really, pretty much anything....

with a pair of these, you can have fun with mid side micing as well...
