View Full Version : Using Pro Tools and Digital Performer

I currently own Pro Tools LE and Digital Performer 3.0 and I would like to use them at the same time. Pro Tools is the hands down winner for recording audio, but DP is the better MIDI sequencer. The Drum Editor alone is worth the price.

What I'd like to do is open Digital Performer and program all of my MIDI stuff. I have an Alesis DM5, Retro AS-1, and NI Pro-52. Then I would export all of my MIDI tracks and import them into Pro Tools. Then record the MIDI as audio.

I am deathly afraid of MIDI. Having OMS and FreeMIDI on my Mac at the same time is keeping me up at night. I can't imagine delving into the project of getting them both to work at the same time. But that would be so convenient. I see lots of people use Logic Audio with Pro Tools - they even have them synched up. But I don't own Logic, I own DP.

So, the question is this: Can I really do this? If so, would someone be willing to walk me through the setup?

Andrew,
There are a couple of different ways to make this work...in fact DP is a great "partner" sequencer for Pro Tools. Can we maybe take this "offline"? Email me(address on the left) and we can go over it...

PS:
If you saved your MIDI data as a standard MIDI file from DP (or Logic or whatever sequencer) that file can open in ProTools, then you can assign everything from there & make audio tracks right there in ProTools...if you can make sense of that.
