If its the song I am thinking of - some sort of vocoder will do it nicely...there is one called "Orange Vocoder" for RTAS (ProTools LE) that we have available through Sweetwater...

That effect is acheived using strong pitch correction. The vocoder effect is a nice effect (to me) but very different and it never seems to be easy to get really good results. I could name a bunch of songs using a true vocoder, but it seems that none of the ones since the late '70s, early '80's got any radio play. I think Midnight Star used a vocoder. Dynamix II (circa '90s early Bass music) used the effect. Today, Freakazoids, Jackal & Hyde, DJ Icey, and many others use them.

Thanks for the correction, TeeCee...I may have been thinking of another track.

It is often claimed that the Cher track was also done with a vocoder. She uses almost the exact same effect. The only interview I read personally stated that they initiated the idea with an old Korg vocoder but they ended up using a combination of something like a Digitech Talker and some other unnamed devices. This effect in way too intelligible to be a vocoder. It's only robotic sounding because the pitch correction is extreme and vocal "portamento" (forgive me for the lack of the proper musical term) goes from note bending ala trombone to note switching ala trumpet.

I believe the song you're thinking of is "Blue" by Effiel 65. If anyone wants to take a listen and try to deconstruct how it was done.

Same concept as Cher, I believe. If you listen to the musically spoken beginning of the song, it sounds like he has terrible pitch. Then the singing in the song at least sounds like he's singing real notes possibly as played by a keyboard. That effect certainly isn't a vocoder, though. Still too intelligible and sounding like a real voice. I haven't played with a pitch correcter to confirm that it is definitely what is being used, but it sounds like no vocoder I've either heard or used.

a lot of singers, mainly pop use that effect. it sounds natural, then hits a note and sounds digital.

it's odd.

a little antares autotune turned way up might help. it sounds really cool. it gives it that cher sound. becuase you can isolate certain pitches to use it on. also alot of times they automate when the effect is being used, so it is only on during some parts of the song
