I think I'm not the only prosumer out there scratching his head as to when most manufacturers will be releasing drivers for their great hardware in Vista.

Do we simply have to wait for The Powers That Be to release proprietary drivers? It seems like Vista's audio stack is complicating ASIO development, but is it really that complicated? However, XP will not be supported forever and we're pretty much guaranteed that things will be released eventually.

I know the solution is to go back to XP, but what a pain. It takes a day to reformat and install XP. This working stiff doesn't have the time...Plus I'd like to keep the "new shiny", it makes me feel like I'm in a cartoon, and when away from work, cartoon is a good place to be.

So, overall, what kind of timeframe can I expect to see some quality Vista driver releases for hardware, specifically M-Audio? Also, what should I expect to be the best multitrack software to save up for on this Vista platform? I liked Logic before Apple ruined it for us PC guys. Pro Tools seems like the best option for me...

I'm really starting to feel like a mushroom...fed dung and kept in the dark...

That last line is hilarious. Time frames are 2-6 months give or take. I have asked numerious times and its a priority for all the manufacturers but kind of like Media Center we are talking about a lot of "extra" non audio applications thrown on a OS that will actually take up more processing power than warranted.. I.E. Benefits compared to features isn't worth it for an audio guy. (at least today) I'm not sure how things are going to turn out in 2-3 months, right now there is a lot of head scratching on all ends.. ;-)

Hang in there, when things are that smelly, and dark, eventually something comes out ripe and worth the wait.

You'll also be happy to know that Vista 'phones home' with at least 20 processes above and beyond the DRM to feed Microsoft with information.

Looks like it may get personal

But the part the erks me is the heavy OS and the mem hog that it is.

The total OS sucks

Are there any small USB or Firewire interfaces available now that have Vista support?

Ok, thanks for the quick response and the info link!
I have also updated the firmware on my Zoom H4 to ver 1.30 and it seems to work with no problems connected to my Toshiba notebook with Vista.
I wanted a less menu-driven, more "knobs" interface though.
I guess I'll have to use the Tascam 144 that's currently in transit on my home computer only until they release new drivers.
I should have done a little more reading...

I personally am using Cakewalk Producer 6 with the Focusrite Saffire Pro 26 I/O on the Windows Vista Ultimate platform and am loving every minute of it. There is also no issue running IZotope Ozone 3. Just my $0.02 worth.
