Andrew:
Using OS9? Combination of Disk Warrior and Norton or TechTool. Disk Warrior is the best app out there right now for both OS9 and OSX for repairing directories. It does things Norton can't think about doing.
Here's my routine when running maintenance apps.
Disk Warrior to rebuild the desktops of all my audio drives (6)
Norton Disk Doctor 6.x to check for damaged files.
Norton Speed Disk to optimize the drive.
I've had no problems with Norton products with OS9 and older and I've been using Macs since '86, and Norton since '91 or so. I can't say that others haven't had issues, but I haven't.

I'm currently using OS 9 for recording but I'm making the switch to OS X as soon as possible. I think I'm going to check out Disk Warrior. I've been using Norton but it's giving me issues.

In OS 9 I use Disk Doctor from Norton on all the drives. After that I run Disk Warrior to rebuild the desktops. This keep our ProTools system up and running. With OSX, I use Disk Warrior's Drive Ten for everything. I have not had any problems since using Drive 10.
