Hello,

I am new to computer based music production but I have a couple of question and if anybody can help it would be greatly appreciated.

1) I have a server machine with 2* 2.4 XEON processors that show up as 4 processors in XP Pro. what operating system will allow me to utilize all 4 cores?

2) will I be able to use Cubase SX3.1 with this operating system and will it utilize all 4 cores and 16gb Ram?

if there is anybody out there that can help with this it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much

Unless you are using 64 bit windows 16 gigs ram is pointless and min 64 bit is questionable as far as audio goes... i build dual xeons all day xp pro.. but 4 gb ram is all they handle

Windows XP only has the ability to handle 4GB of memory addresses, but this includes all the devices on the machine, so by the time it gives out addresses for cpu and hard drive cache, and anything else on the motherboard, you'll usually only be able to address 3.5 to 4 GB of the installed RAM.

64-bit versions of Windows can see more than that. Most motherboards can address up to 4 or 8 GB depending on the model.

If you're going with two physical CPU's, you have to use XP Pro or Server.
XP Home can only address one CPU socket. (but can see multiple cores just fine)
