I'm looking to purchase a pair of high quality mics and a digital/audio converter to compliment my Mac Powerbook G3 400,OS X, Jam/Peak LE 3.0, and a Maxtor 5400 Firewire external hard drive via a "firewire to go" bus card to record Classical Piano on a Steinway Babygrand. I would like the ability to use the D/A converter to record multi-player sessions, midi, etc. in the future. I have a budget of $1500-2000.
Suggestions Concerning
1) Hardware
2)Software
3)Mic Placement
4) Reading Materials

I just realized that your post was never answered. This is something I have a great deal of experience, as classical recording used to be my full-time job. Please call me at 1-800-222-4700, ext. 1283 if this is something you are still considering.

MOTU 824 would be an excellent choice. I would have recommended a 7200rpm FireWire drive. Mic placement, there are some postings on the newsletters, isync section of Sweetwater's site. Personally, I place one above the hammers around C1, another around C6, and another at the tail end under the sound board. Has worked great for me using AKG C414's.
