View Full Version : Multiple file selection and sort order

For a while now, one thing that has bugged me about Windows is that if you are selecting multiple files to be opened (i.e., when attaching files to an email, or loading music files into a music player), they all seem to get sorted normally, except that the last file is first. (i.e., if you have files called 1.mp3, 2.mp3, 3.mp3, and 4.mp3 and select them all to play in a music player, they will load in the software in the order 4.mp3, 1.mp3, 2.mp3, 3.mp3). Has anyone else noticed this? Is this a bug in Windows, or did they intend it to behave this way?

If the files are actually called 1.mp3 etc it CAN screw up windows. I'm an animator, and i make it a rule to never use a number in the file name. Understand I'm making thousands of files in a given sequence. (30 fps in ntsc) so if the shot is called shot1.. i always name it "shot_one" then the sequence calls the files shot_one.0001, shot_one.002 etc. Using a number in the file name usually messes things up.
If that's not the issue.. I've noticed when using windows media player to play a bunch of songs, it matters (i can't explain why) whether you clicked the first file and <shift> click the last one to grab several files, or if you click the last one and <shift> click the first one. I've noticed starting at the end will mess up the order in the play list. Clicking the first file first.. and <shift> clicking the last one shoud maintain play order.
Hope this helps!

I was only using the filenames 1.mp3, etc. as an example. Often, I'll select a bunch of MP3 files to play in my media player, and my MP3 filenames are more descriptive than that. I usually select files by clicking the first one, then holding shift down and clicking the last file, and that last file is always on the top. So you may be right, the order of the files you click on may be important.

I have pages and pages of some of my fave bands.. and theres a habit of scolling to the end and clicking that last one.. then going back to the first to select them all. The funny thing was.. I had done it one minute before i logged in here and was going WTF?. i was listening to the first song from this band and said.. "yea this will be good for today" so i scrolled to the end and selected and dragged into media player.. and it wasn't the song i was just listening to!!!! select from top to bottom and it should work!
