I can't get audio from Cubase when I'm in a remote desktop session. I
can open a wave file and get audio, and I get audio from clicking on
stuff and things like that, but I get nothing from Cubase (on my
laptop speakers when controlling the desktop from my laptop).

My sound card is an M-Audio Delta 1010, and I also have a sound card
built into the motherboard.

I have tried setting each of them as the default in the control
panel, and as soon as I try to play anything in Cubase the default
audio device changes to some generic Microsoft device.

I have even ran a cable from my headphone amp (coming from the Delta
1010) to the mic input on the motherboard sound card. Still no go.
Same thing. Cubase changes the default audio device to some generic
Microsoft device.

Has anyone ever got audio from Cubase in a remote desktop session in
XP?

Once I get that sorted, I can try to get MIDI over LAN working and
use my existing WiFi to transmit the MIDI and audio to my laptop
speakers/headphone jack and my laptop MIDI controller. Then I can lay
in bed and have access to my studio.

Using Windows XP Pro with SP2 (both computers) and Cubase
SX3.whatever the latest update is. All of my gear is in my sig if you
wonder what I am using.

I hate to say this, but if Cubase wasn't designed to work with Remote Desktop Protocol, you may not get audio through a remote console. Audio is pumped through a "virtual" connection, and software generally has to connect to that to get through. There are a lot of things that won't go through the virtual channel without help, and it is a serious bit of code to add support for that virtual channel.

(Citrix on the server side provides a lot more virtualization of server resources to send audio and video to the client, but even it isn't totally smooth.)

Also, consider that your music will be going through yet another layer of lossy compression to get to you through that RDP connection, and will not be as clean as it is on your desktop. If you are expecting things to be identical, you will be disappointed. (That's assuming you can get any of the audio to go through at all...)

Yeah, there's no way I'd do any final mixes on my laptop speakers anyway. I kow the quality wouldn't be as good as if I was in the studio.

It would just be nice to hear it on my laptop anyway.

Do you know of any 3rd party remote desktop apps (like PC Anywhere or something like that) that would allow me to hear Cubase remotely?

I don't know of anything right off the top of my head.. What I do to make things available at other spots in the house: run it through Windows Media Encoder... Go for a 128k bitstream, and generally things sound fairly good.

(Example: http://billblom.serveftp.com -- you can hear a couple of my quickies in the first 3 links... I'm working on a DVD for a non profit on there, and there are some samples available there...) - The sound files (first 3 links) are 120k streams, if I remember correctly... it's been a while since I pulled them off the master and stuffed them on the server.)

You can drop the compressed stuff in a share, map a drive to it, and click happily.

WIll Windows Media Encoder let me play Cubase though?

I have no experience with Windows Media Encoder, so forgive me if these questions are stupid...

Can I open Cubase, open a project I'm working on, hit play, and somehow tell Windows Media Encoder to grab that audio? Or does WIndows Media Encoder only work with audio files and not audio apps?

That is a GREAT question. I'm not sure. However, windows media encoder CAN encode a live stream... You will have a second or two worth of delay on that. (That's an area I'm not really up to date on..) - The encoder is free on the MS web site... and it allows you to specify where the audio is coming from.. (you might have to plug the output of the cubase into the input jack on your computer's sound card...)
