What is an SPL.. Whats it for ? do i need one?

Well, if you are talking handguns it would mean "special". If you are talking sound, it should mean Sound Pressure Level. That is the relative "volume" of the PA or speaker, generally (for sensitivity and output not overall) with 1 Watt in measured at 3 feet on axis with the speaker.
SPL's over 85 can cause hearing loss if long term.

Correction: SPL's over 85dB "A" weighted can cause damage. There are different weightings used for different purposes. Answers to that can most likely be found in the InSync section of this website.

Do you mean an SPL meter?

They are useful if you do live sound. I don't know you or what you do, so I can't really tell you if you need one, though.

well i was wondering about calibration and and what it has to with spl and how to calibrate my digi 002 and pro tools software (im useing the headphone out to some speakers.. no studio monitors)
