ok, i have the digi001 and the presonus digimax. the presonus is acting as the sync master- i selected 'optical' for the external sync in protools.
question is, would i get a better signal by using a stand-alone sync generator to feed the presonus' wordclock in? would it really make a difference?
the tracks i'm recording right now are free of any sync glitches, but i read about engineers hearing 'a much more defined and deeper' signal when a master sync box is used.
anybody using this setup have any comments?

Jamie,
I don't think that you are going to benefit much from an external clock that is only driving the presonus digimax. I have read an article that states the "unpopular" opinion that using the clock designed to work with the gear you are using is often just as good "if not better" than driving that piece of gear with an external clock source such as the "ardsync".
This is not to say that an external clock generator doesn't have it's place in the digital studio of today. If you are trying to interconnect several pieces of digital equipment, (a DAW, DAT maching, CD burner, Digital Console, Finalizer, Digital reverb, MDMs), then you will surely need to consider a central clocking device to maintain a solid, low jitter digital audio path as trying to daisy chain from one device to another can become a "pop! Click!" nightmare.
Good luck with your recording endeavors!!

chad- thanks for the info.
it looks like i'm going to have to get some kind of a/d converter (from an amek 9098 to the digi001) so i suppose some kind of sync will be necessary.
ya know, i seem to remember hearing that going digital was going to be easier and cheaper... i'm not buying that one anymore!

Really? And you say digital is expensive???? Too bad you don't have two 9098s, because then you could just sell them both and BUY Digidesign! :)

... Nevermind, I thought you were talking about the 9098 consonle. You probably just meant the 9098 preamp. That would make more sense. :) (Whereas a 001 running 8 channels of a 9098 desk (the sales tax on a 9098 would be enough to buy a truck load of 001s) would make absolutely none!)
