Hello again! I recently bought a Raduis-5 mic tube pre and as I sit here reading the instructions (last resort ya know) I have to ask, how the heck do you set unity gain on a mackie using the tube pre with the mic plugged into the back? Is it just set straight up? Completely down? Somewhere in the middle?
I'd rather not plug the tube mp directly into the HDR because then I can't put a little verb in the headphone mix.
Any ideas?
Also! I just got a OZ Audio HR-4 headphone amp thingie and was wondering if there was another way to hook it up rather than using the main inserts which are already by the eq.
Flustered.

You set unity gain just like you would for any other line level device - just make sure you're plugged into a line input, and the channels is set to line (not mic.). Why can't you add reverb to the 'phones mix if you go directly to your recorder? Don't you have any aux/FX sends on your tape return channels? If not, how the heck are you going to mix? :D

But if he's using an outboard mic pre, he DOESN'T want to then route it through the Mackie's preamp...which is what you're (still) doing when you go into the Line input. It would not only be redundant, it would add unnecessary circuitry, with all its potential for noise and/or distortion.
Instead, he should come from his outboard mic preamp into the Insert (return), thereby bypassing the preamp but entering the channel strip pre-fader.
If I'm not mistaken, a standard unbalanced 1/4" TS plug will make contact with the return when fully inserted into a Mackie Insert jack. (And if I'm wrong about that, it means the plug just gets pushed in halfway, until the first click.)

Thanks for the post, I got the issue resolved and you are correct, I just turned the Mackie pregain all the way down and went line level in and used the Radius 5's pre.
Thanks!
