I have a samson mdr1064 10 channel mixer, from the mixer the left and right out go to my tascam us-122 interface, which goes via USB to my computer. My problem is this. i have seven mics on my drumset, all going into my mixer, but of course it records to my computer as simply a stereo track, L and R. how can I record all the channels on my mixer simultaneously and separately onto my PC for further mixing, or is there another way? I have been told firewire, and other things. I consider myself relatively new to recording, any help is much appreciated.

You will need an interface with 7 separate inputs on it. The US 122 only has two, so that's your limit to record. Also, the mixer does not have discreet outputs on it for each channel, so the only was you can use the mic inputs of the mixer would be to wrangle an unbalanced output using the insert jacks.

what should i be looking for then, a firewire interface? could you recommend a few that I should look at? ones that will record all the tracks simultaneously? thanks so much

There are a lot of options. A Firewire or PCI interface will probably be the best bet for you. If I were you, I'd call and talk to one of our sales engineers in person. They can get a feel for what you want to achieve, and how your studio may need to grow in the future and they can make a good recommendation based on that.

If you don't have a contact in sales yet, you can call 1.800.222.4700 and we can get someone assigned for you. (or e-mail sales@sweetwater.com)

I've had good luck with the MOTU 2408.

thanks for the help, it's just that i'm on a budget, and I looked up the motu it runs about 1,000 I believe. also, it has 24 tracks which is overkill for what i'm doing. is there anything that will do 8 simultaneously, for say, 300-400?

thanks again

You might try an original 2408 on ebay. This might be your cheapest route.

There are lots of options for what you're doing. You can do some searches on our website or (better) just call up one of our sales engineers and they can cut through everything and zero you in on what you should be looking for based on your needs. At the point where it sounds like you are a two-way conversation will be much more efficient and helpful than random recommendations on a forum.
