Digital Performer monitoring problems

When I monitor input, the output from my monitors is at a normal level, but when I play audio back the volume is extremly loud. I'm wondering why this is happening. Is there a way to make it so that the volume of the input monitoring is the same as the playback volume? I'm using an 896, and a pair of mackie HR824's. The other thing is that in the sound devices menu, if I choose MAS and bring the volume of that down, the volume goes back up when i close the window. Can anyone help with this?

Brandon I'm using the exact set-up, maybe this will help.
Make sure that the 824s are in the Main Outs and the monitor level is at zero on the front panel of the 896. The Phone switch is not enabled and the Main out is. If it is your going to get the volume problem you mentioned. Also when you monitor thru headphones hit the Phone switch and completely turn OFF the HR824s ( power off ) Hope this helps...Lou
