Of course there are those at Sonic Foundry's site, and Beamasonic, but are there any commercial grade impulses of high end gear out there like perhaps top of the line Lexicon verbs, etc? Does Sweetwater stock any?

hey mrc. what did you think of the beamsonic impulses? do you think they are good emulators of the microphones, amps, and studio gear? ive always wanted to get opinions of other people on these.

The nicest impulse responses of Lexicon 480L and TC Electronic M5000, that I know of, is the Samplitools Vol 1 & 2 from SEK'D. I own them and use them. Do they replace a 480L or M5000? No way. Do they come pretty close? Yes. I think it might be worth it for you to get it, if you really crave the high-end reverb sound without the cost of the hardware.

Clay,
Do they work as well in AM, as samplitude?
Would you say the 480 impulses are better than the sound of lessor leicon hardware units?
Darnold,
I have them, but haven't used them enough to judge, yet. I've read lot's of praises, but don't have an opinion at this time (which is truly OUT of Character :)
Thanks for the replies

mrc, they work equally well with every acoustic modeling software out there, including SF Acoustic Modeler. It clearly states on the CD "for use with Samplitude, or any other acoustic modeling application." I have used it with both. Let me go on record as saying that I do not believe that ANY software reverb is as good as the top-end hardware pieces, but assuming that you have a great sounding set of I/O converters, I think it is AS GOOD as many of the lesser cost reverb hardware boxes. Not better, however. It does sound a lot like a 480L or M5000 in character. That's only my opinion.

Clay,
um, I have an AI3 as 8 primary's and A Blackface adat as 8 secondary's, but that's adjustable :), so they are probably better than a Lexicon unit a step down from the 480, say something like the pcm 90 (is that model name and number right?).......what do the impulses cost, and are they a sweetwater item?

mrc, I do not normally carry SampliTools Impulse Responses at Sweetwater. I can always special order a copy for you, if you'd like. As you point out, with the system you have it will be a very good addition, probably as good as a Lexicon PCM91 and TC Electronic M3000. For everybody else, so I can clarify my comments, the biggest advantage to the stand-alone boxes are the fine quality converters. Impulse responses, whichever brand, are only as good as the hardware you run them through. If anyone would like to pick-up a copy of SampliTools IR, the CD lists for $99 and I'd be glad to special order them for any of you for $79. Call me at Sweetwater x1247 if your interested. -clay
