I've been using a free program to edit audio recordings for about an year, but I'm beginning to find that it doesn't really do all I want it to do. Can anyone suggest another similar program - a bit more advanced?

Welll you didn't say what you've been using, so we won't know what NOT to suggest to you!!! (We're not psychic) :)
Here's some freebies:
Plenty of software around to record for free to start out on:
Audacity: http://audacity.sourceforge.net
Kristal: http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/
Quartz: http://www.download.com/Quartz-AudioMaster-Freeware/3000-2170_4-4117152.html?tag=lst-0-1
Other freebies and shareware: www.hitsquad.com/smm
(Hitsquad is always a great place to start looking for audio software...)
ALSO: Run out and see if you can still find a copy of "Computer Music" magazine issue 103 (July in UK, August in US) at Barnes&Noble or Borders. They gave away on the disc-of-the-month DVD a full $100 copy of SamplitudeV8SE - 48audio tracks/unlimited MIDI tracks. VERY powerful program!!!! Full suite of other audio software too.

If you want something that has virtually no learning curve to it but is a good transition into some of the more intermediate software you should try Cool Edit Pro 2.0 It was bought out by Adobe and is now called Audition but it was a good program in its day and I've found is really useful in teaching people some of the more in depth features of DAW's. Don't get me wrong it's nothing special but it gets the job done and gets you really used to working in an environment similar to Pro Tools or even DP.

Audacity is a good choice. Actually I'd recommend looking into an affordable interface and typically you will find that Cubase or another similar program comes with the interface as an add-on.
As an example check out the US122L from Tascam. The US-122L is packaged with two music production software tools at no added cost: TASCAM’s GigaStudio 3 LE sampling software (PC only) and Steinberg’s Cubase LE 48-track recording/sequencing software. Right out of the box, you can install the software, plug in the US-122L, and begin creating music.
$149! Great interface, great software. All at great value.

i agree with scott. i have the older model us122 and its basically the same thing. I personally would say that adobe audition is a better application if your recording live instruments, but i tried cubase and its a lot more complicated than you might need for simple recordings. i will admit you can do a lot more canned instruments stuff with cubase (midi). im sure its a good application but i suggest you make sure you get the right owners manual for cubase (i didnt, i got the wrong cubase owners manual with my us 122) and study hard youngn.

For general Audio editing purpose like you said, FlexiMusic Wave Editor (http://www.fleximusic.com/) will do, that is I guess is the cheapest one with those features.
I use Adobe Audition 2.0 and I also have a copy of Cubase LE. Audition will do just about anything you need to do as far as audio recording and editing. As for Midi, it falls short. What it does have to offer that I think is exceptional is the written manuals and tutorials it comes packed with. Here's a free program that I think is pretty good. http://www.cockos.com/reaper/
