I am starting a new project in my studio and have about $2500 to spend on new gear...i am running protools 7.1 on pc with mackie monitors...i am basically using a u87 and avalon 737 for all my recordings...what should i spend this money on that will give me the greatest increase in quality to my studio?
(i was thinking along the line of a new mic/pre combo to give a different flavor but i am open to all suggestions)

I'd invest in something to assist in mastering. Either a plug in or a hardware unit like the Finalizer. But that's just me. :D

What are you doing for the project? producing using keys and synths as well, or just recording. If you are going to be producing, I would invest in some more sound libraries. If not, a new mic and pre might be a nice addition too. what kind of music?

i am doing pop/folk recording, mostly accoustic instruments (gtr, flute, fiddle, hand percussion) and some elect. gtr...for vocals i'm happy with what i have...this budget is not including sounds...i do need a great piano sample, but that is a seperate issue...i was thinking about converters but i dont think that it would give me as much versatility as having a secong high quality imput chain

if you are using mainly only one mic, yeah, get another so you can do some stereo micing, and what not for this. Well, I am sure you have other mics, but another good one might be great for an acoustic set.
Josh - don't know what converters you are using, but you sure have a very nice mic/pre for your recordings. I'm guessing you are using LE, right? I added a Benchmark DAC-1 to my 002R and let me tell you that makes a whale of an improvement. I don't record at home, just do mix stuff. I bought a Mini-Me for the front end of a PMD-671 compact flash recorder and it sure beats the front end of that box.
I think converters are a great way to go. If you are using a 002R, check out the Black Lion Audio mod, too.

I think that there is no better way to spend your money than in conversion and solid clocking. It has made a world of difference for me.
