Hello there,

I just purchased a pair of KRK V8's used. Upon delivery they powered up and functioned fine. However, a couple days later, something strange started happening:

When I turn the power on one of the speakers, there is a major (ie: loud) popping sound coming out of the woofer. It sounds like a huge static burst, and I've never seen a woofer shake that far back and forth (not cool, I know).

I thought the problem might be coming from the signal input, but I'm getting this problem with everything unplugged (except for the power cord). It seems like the speaker doesn't like the power going into it, but I don't understand why that would happen, and I don't know what I would need to fix to make this problem stop.

Does anyone know what might lead to this problem? And how can I go about fixing it? Help me, please!?!?!

Are your monitors plugged into a surge protector power strip? Sounds like a power surge is hitting the speaker. You might want to invest in a power supply that regulates the voltage.

Yes, they are plugged into a "surge strip" power strip. However, I will purchase a new one to see if that is the problem.

Any other ideas?

Did you maybe blow that woofer? All active speakers make a small pop when being powered on, but a blown woofer might really make a loud pop. I can't think of what else it could be, sorry.

Disconnect everything from the speaker. Plug the electric cord directly into a properly grounded wall outlet (no power strip). If it still does this when you turn it on you should call KRK. It is common for powered speakers to have a slight pop when turning on, but it shouldn't be nearly as dramatic as you describe.
