DFreqTIP - Setting the Sound Blaster SoundFont Cache

Whenever someone tells me they are using a Sound Blaster Live sound
card for music recording, I cringe a little. Then I calmly explain
to them that the Sound Blaster Live is a consumer-level sound card,
and is not made for serious music making. Sure, if you're just
making music as a hobby or just for fun, then an SB Live may be all
you need, but you'll still run into its many quirks.

Case in point... when trying to adjust the SoundFont Cache, you may
find that it keeps getting reset every time you restart your PC.
This means you have to adjust it each time you boot your system.
Very annoying. Well, with a little Windows Registry tweaking, at
least that one quirk can be kicked to the curb. Here's how...

Great advice, now qualify the O/S - Win98 flavors, not Win2000. Wonder why that is? Appreciate the link too!

I'm with the cringing point of view, what a bunch of garbage to have to go through just to make music! I'd have lost half of my idea for the song by the time I got it booted! Our brains are split, I can't be technical and super creative at the same time, perhaps I'm inferior and there are a bunch of super humans out there that can, but why disrupt the creative flow?

You are exactly right! Why bother? Keep It Sweet & Simple (KISS)! It's all about the music! We hope, by sharing and writing about our experiences, we can help others along the way to get it right the first time! Ever heard the term Defenestration? They MUST have had PC's in mind even then. When a PC works, great. When they don't, they're a pile of junk! A PC is a Tool.

Remember those Tape Reverbs 20 years ago before Eventides? Hassle right? Maybe it would work for a Session, maybe not. We all still could not wait to get our hands on one to use! A Tool.

Even with all the hassles of PC's we're still able to create music in new ways. Once the homework is done, the fun begins! Too many Vendors expect Users to know what they mean, but don't take the time to explain or show us how to use their gizmos.

Compared to what we went through 20 years ago, this is nothing. it's just different. We learn, we adapt. It's all about the music! And KISS!

I'm simple minded, my brain only holds so much mush... Before the mush turns to jelly. As for this thread about the Sound Blaster Live - Creative has problems. Market share does not mean better quality. If that were so, we'd all be using OS/2 or BE O/S but here's where we are and Sound Blaster Live's can't cut it on several levels. Sorry Creative bought EMU & Ensoniq but... Consumer level > Education - People should demand more! We all deserve better. The Technology is there. We've come along way with Digital since 1998. Creative is dragging.

PC's are the perfect platform for Digital Audio, we just have to educate Users on Goals, Expectations and Requirements. Once setup & configured - It's all about the music!

ON a PC IMO - WDM, ASIO & GSIF is finally getting us a better path to making music. And if everyone prefered an acoustic piano, we'd all be out of a job!
