Hi all. Long time since I've been here. Anyway, I'm headed off to college this fall, and I came accross what looks to be an awesome deal. Through my college, I can get Acid, Vegas+DVD, and Sound Forge all together for 600 bucks.

I currently use Cubase LE which came with my Firepod. Will these three programs together provide the functionality I get with Cubase? I know Vegas is video editing, but my thoughts are that between Acid and Sound Forge, I would be better off.

I'm sure that Sound Forge is a great editor, but how is it with straight recording?

Thanks,
Smiley

Actually Vegas is much more than video editing. It's a pretty capable audio workstation as well, and of all of these will arguably come closest to doing what you do in Cubase, although the newest version of ACID does a lot as well. I'm not that familiar with Cubase LE, but my guess is you will be more than satisfied with the capabilities of all that Sony software.

Maybe someone else with more familiarity on these programs can chime in.

Thanks! That's good to know.

Cubase LE is basically Cubase SL, with a 32-track limitation. I'm sure there are some other differences, mainly, the fact that you get no support with LE, but that's a general reference to go by.

Remember Soundforge is a 2 track program, not a multi-track program like Acid or Vegas. It has a lot of great features though, and does the job well. Also, from when I used to use these programs, I noticed that Soundforge sounded amazingly better than Acid. The difference was staggering actually. I called Acid about it (the before Sony days) and they said they couldn't do anything about it. The looping algorythms changed the sound. The difference was like the difference between recording a drum kit to tape, and recording it through a mackie into a firepod.

Not sure if they ever "fixed" that or not.
