In my mind the audio interface coupled with todays ultra fast computer systems have changed the direction of recording all togethor.
Not only has it made it a hell of a lot easier to edit, process, mix, automate and store audio data. But it has allowed the common man to have somewhat of a recording studio in his home in his bedroom right next to his bed for very little money. This technolgy was unprecedented less that a couple decades ago now you are seeing common people making recordings on they computers with free software like garageband at home all the way to fullscale highend recording facilities using the same technology to produce world class recordings. Musicians with a pro tools le rig can bring their recordings to other studios for mixdown overdubs sending audio files to other musicians to work with etc.. you are seeing less artists sobbing about getting a record label to finance their album and more artists financing it themselves. completely DIY. now the inernet combined with the DAW is another story
