what do you plan on recording? what mics?...they are both great peices of gear with two distinct sounds and personalities....for example if you are using a u87 i dont think anyone would tell you to go with th ua....

the avalon is a very pritine hi-fi sounding peich of gear...the eq is great and the compressor is not that great...it won't add too much charachter, but it does have a certain warmth and intimacy to it once you get used to it...and i find it to sound very alive...
the ua's compressor is much more usable, it's much more tubeier and has more "sound" to it...it will probably be a better match for the 414 than the avalon (which is on the bright side)...

really? I was in on a session with a very famous producer, and that is just what they used, a U87 and a UA. I love the UA. (I am not saying famous producer as any reflection on me, just the fact that it was a high profile session, and that is what they choose to use, and it sounded beautiful)

I have the LA-610 with telefunken tubes. I also agree that the u87 is not a good match for the UA. I have only gotten one good vocal session with that combo. I will usually use my isa 220 with my u87. On the other hand my AKG 414 sound very good with the LA-610. I am Thinking of getting an Avalon 737 to pair with my u87 something tells me that this combo could be a winner.

Maybe that day it worked out too, but it sure did sound nice. It was one of the reasons I bought one myself.

i didn't say it would never work, just as a main mic/pre combo it would not be a good choice...if you are only working with one specific vocalist and the ua/u87 combo sounds great than by all means follow your ears...but in working with the avalon/u87 combo for 4 years now i have yet to find something it sounds really horible on...and in most instances it sounds great...
