I Purchased a G4 with a flat screen monitor with an Mbox 2 and Pro tools 7

I am noticing that when I set up my record session, there is a lag when I push the space bar and time it takes to start recording.

It's not a memory issue because I have checked.

Any thoughts about this.

It's not likely to be a memory problem anyway but.....what exactly have you checked?

It sounds much more like a drive access problem. what drive are you using? How full is it? How fragmented is it? Have you tried recording to another drive?

My drive isn't full at all. Is there something I can check within Pro tools. Something that should be pressed that isn't?

When you say lag time, how long? 3 seconds? 10 seconds?

I still suspect it's a drive issue. Could you share some details about your drive?

It's about a four second time lag

byw-at the moment, I do not have an external hard drive. I don't know if this would make a difference

Sometimes if you let pt sit for a bit, then try to play or hit record, it takes a tad longer to get into it. 4 seconds, while it shouldn't take that long all the time, is not a horrible lag time. It kinda sounds like your drive is buffering or somting, not sure. Make sure your drive is not set to sleep when inactive

Thanks I appreciate the reply. Is there anything I can do or check within Pro tools, such as running a diagnostic that can give me an idea of what is happening. What about within the hard itself? Maybe there is something within the pro tools menu that I am not taking into account.

Hmmm, not quite sure, if you are set to a higher buffer size, like over 512, it may slow the response down a bit. Or within your system preferences, check you energy saver settings, your should have "put your computer to sleep when inactive" set to never, and also make sure that on the bottom, you do not have the put drives to sleep checked.... maybe start there. also make sure there is not pre roll settings on your transport, or often sometimes the 2 bar midi thing is checked, which makes pt start after 2 bars.......

Supposing I was to also tell you that I don't currently have an external hard drive to record to. Would this slow down operations assuming that there are a lot of programs on the computer?

yeah. If there's little space left on your internal drive, it's full of programs (who know's how many are eating up ram in the background) and it's quite defragmented, then hell yeah it'll slow you down. Way down.

Audio you're the man. I went into the transport menu and that's exactly what was happening. I had preroll checked and when I unchecked it everything was fine.

Thanks again.

I do have another question.

If for example I send you an itune file, do you need itunes to open it?

If you do need it and you don't have it, what can I do on my end to make it easier for the recipient?

If I download "Cakewalk" will this make it easier.

I had similar problem way back with GarageBand and my iMac G4. The fix turned out to be the following:
1. In system preferences dechecked the box that put the hard drive to sleep whenever possible. This made a big difference. Your hard drive should be set so as to never go to sleep when working with DAW. Then every time you start there will be about 4 second lag before the HD wakes up. Also make sure that your screen savers and sleep modes are deselected when working with DAW software.
2. Make sure that there are no other applications running in the background. You can hit the command and tab keys simultaneously and all the apps that are running will appear on the screen. Then shut down everything, except of course your DAW software.
3. You may want to consider an external Firewire drive for DAW. I just purchased a 300 GB Firewire HD for $200 and it will arrive tomorrow. I plan to use if for GB. My guess is that it should make a difference, I'll have to let you know.

check your transport box.You may have it set for conductor and a 4 measure delay. This would allow a delay when you push play or record.Click the conductor off and this will solve your problem.Hope this helps.
