I have a G3/266 running OS9.0. I'm having all sorts of problems with Sherlock 2 v 3.0.1. For instance, last night, I started up and clicked on the Find button. A dialog box came up saying something to the effect that "Find By Content" is unavailable. To update to the latest version, re-insert OS CD... or something like that. Latest version? My OS contains the same version of Sherlock I now have on my machine.
As things now stand, I can search for files, but can't "Find by Content", because I think that requires the volumes to be indexed. Trouble is, the "index volumes" option in the menu is greyed out. The "languages" option in Sherlock is also greyed out and there's no interface that allows me to set a time to automatically index my volumes.
The main Sherlock screen says "Volumes not Indexed" under all my hard drives.
But get this, if I set the Extensions Manager to OS9 All, I get all my options back and the dialog box tells me that my volumes were indexed a week or so ago.
Last night, I trashed all the Sherlock/Finder preferences I could find, but I don't know yet if that will help.
Is there somewhere on the net where I can download just Sherlock 2?
Sorry for rambling, but would appreciate any insight.
Thanks

The "0" replies I received for my Sherlock question may have been "tough love" or an absolute lack of interest, but guess what? I solved it myself. I went to the Extensions Manager and set it to Mac OS 9.0 All and Sherlock worked perfectly. Then tried Mac OS 9.0 Base, with the same results. Using the Base copy as a template, I added the elements I needed to run my various audio programs and I'm back in business.

I think you need to establish what you installed to make sherlock behave this way as it sounds as if you have an extensions conflict.

I'm glad to hear you have it sorted although I think setting OS all or Base removes the loading of some extensions specific to certain pieces of software you may use. All i'm saying is, I doubt the problem is fixed, more avoided with a work around.

I personally would use Tome Read and remove the sherlock installer from the original OS 9 CD.

Alternatively, you could upgrade to 9.2.2 which is a free download and will more than likely reinstall all of those sherlocky type apps within OS9...

If you get stuck with Mac problems in the future, I know no better place to go than Dealchat Mac.

Thanks for the tips. One of the things that I discovered while trolling through the Extensions and Control Panels sets is all of the items that are loaded but not needed. I went back to "Mac OS 8 For Dummies", or something like that and unchecked at least 50 extensions that had absolutely no bearing on the kind of work I do. Maybe they were causing the hiccup.
Anyway, life is learning.

Conflict catcher is a good one if you suffer problems. It should indentify problems with extension conflicts..
