now, i know mastering is best left to professionals, but i'd like to polish some of my stuff up a bit when i'm done mixing it. i'd like to know what are the key aspects of it? what is done to a track to master it? i have vague ideas, but anything specific would help. thanks for any information...

Multi-band compression, eq, adjusting the levels of all the songs so they're even across the album, adjusting the time between tracks, making a disk to send to the duplication house..

We had a bit of a spam problem on this thread. But it's fixed now. Hynek knows what I'm talking about.

Sleezy pricelist pasted across two screens. Jeff gave it a prompt shotdown.

okay, that's good enough for me. i had never heard of multi-band compression. i did a little research into it and it sounds pretty hot. i had noticed that un-wanted squeeze on transients when compressing a mix-down even slightly but had no idea how to get around that. thanks for the info. cheers.

What would be best for you is to find a few mastering engineers and have them do a test master for you. Then pick which one you like best. Most professionals will do it for free.

yeah.... the only problem is we're working with a very tight budget and mastering may be too much. i mean, i's not that big of a problem, it's not going to be a commercial release or anything, more of a DIY thing... that and it's a full-length, so it could get pricey. if it were 3 songs i'd totally have a pro do it.

ahhhh
talk to Brad about it, he's cool.
Also, I know a guy locally who'll do it for $50 a song.
