What is the optimum manner of converting CD files
(*.cda) to *.wav files for purposes of editing; e.g., with ProTools in a Windows NT environment.

Well, I can tell you one thing, Sound Forge won't open them! But maybe if you look around at somewhere like www.harmonycentral.com might be able to find some free little utility that will help you out.

The cda file is nothing more than a pointer to the real audio file on your audio CDs (which you cannot see on a PC).
hokypokynose, SoundForge5 WILL rip audio from your CDs (on the menu bar, select Tools>Extract Audio from CD). It's a great way to extract audio so that you can compare songs to your compositions or just save as MP3s.
If you need a free tool, Musicmatch Jukebox (www.musicmatch.com) is a great MP3 ripper and player.

I figuered it should, and might, but I'm too cheap to fork over the bucks for sound forge 5.
