Top 10 Reasons to Upgrade to Pro Tools 10

AAX Plug-in Format Designed to integrate with the new HDX DSP-acceleration hardware, Avid's AAX (Avid Audio Extension) plug-in format brings previously TDM-only plug-ins (e.g., Impact and Reverb One) into all versions of Pro Tools 10. This 64-bit-ready plug-in format lets you choose native or DSP processing, and though RTAS and TDM plug-ins continue to work in Pro Tools 10 and Pro Tools|HD 10, AAX introduces a new standard in Pro Tools plug-in development. And since Pro Tools 10 now supports up to 16,383 samples of delay compensation, you can pile on the plug-ins.
Clip Gain Whether you're in post or music production, clip gain adds a powerful new way to work in Pro Tools. Each clip now has its own volume, which acts independently from the track volume. For each clip, you can boost, cut, or even make dynamic changes similar to automation - all without affecting the rest of the audio on the track or rewriting your automation. What's more, you can convert clip gain to automation, convert automation to clip gain, and even import clip gain from Media Composer sessions.
Upgraded AudioSuite Processing AudioSuite plug-ins now support targeting, just as real-time plug-ins do. That means you can keep multiple AudioSuite windows open at once, making it easier to process several clips with more than one plug-in. You can even preserve all of your open AudioSuite windows and their settings in custom Window Configurations, allowing you to instantly recall your favorite settings for batch processing. The ability to process handles (audio just before and after the selected clip) also lets you apply processing without limiting your ability to crossfade clips later. Finally, reverse processing lets you apply reverse reverb and delay via a single click.
Channel Strip Plug-in Pro Tools has always come with fantastic plug-ins, but for Pro Tools 10, Avid decided to kick it up a notch. They're introducing three amazing new plug-ins, exclusively for Pro Tools 10.

First, there's Avid's Channel Strip plug-in. Taken straight from the legendary System 5 console, this flexible channel-strip-style plug-in gives you a wide range of tone-shaping power.

Next, there's the Down Mixer plug-in, which gives you amazing summing that lets you easily take a multitrack session as complex as 7.1 surround and mix it down to 5.1, 2.1, stereo, or other channel configurations.

Finally, there's Avid's awesome Mod Delay III plug-in, which lets you add fun and creative time-based effects. Simply put, these new plug-ins alone are worth more than the price of upgrading to Pro Tools 10.
Advanced EUCON Integration Pro Tools 9 introduced EUCON support, but that was just the beginning. Pro Tools 10 introduces over 500 newly supported functions that you can control with EUCON. Any command you can access from Pro Tools' pull-down menus (not just those with key commands) is now available to you via your EUCON-equipped control surface. Pro Tools 10 also introduces EUCON support for the Avid XMON system with System 5-MC.. Whether you use an affordable Artist Series controller or a full-blown System 5-MC system, you'll get more out of your EUCON-enabled control surface by using Pro Tools 10.
Real-time Fades Sick of dealing with fade files? Well, in Pro Tools 10, all fades are handled in real time. Not only does this eliminate the need to rebuild lost or missing fade files, but it also lets you add and edit fades during playback. What's more, Pro Tools 10 introduces Avid's new Overlapping Crossfades view, which lets you fine-tune your fades.
All-new Disk Engine Not only can Pro Tools 10 handle multiple kinds of file types in a single session, it features, but it also features a completely rewritten Disk Engine that significantly improves file-handling performance. In Pro Tools HD 10, you can even load your entire session into RAM. This dramatically increases your workflow, allowing you to trigger cue points, adjust playback loops, and make significant edits, all without stopping playback. The Disk Engine also lets you read and record from flash drives, networked hard drives, RAID systems, and server storage systems such as Avid's ISIS 5000.
32-bit Floating-point Audio Format With 32-bit floating-point bit-depth audio files, your audio won't dither down to 24-bit, a process that adds noise and reduces sound quality. This profoundly affects Pro Tools|HDX since audio will no longer dither down to 24-bit between plug-ins. The result: your audio will sound better than ever!
Flexible Session Structure Whether you need to import audio from Media Composer or upload your new track to SoundCloud, Pro Tools 10 has the functions you need. Pro Tools 10 can support multiple audio-file types and settings in a single session, which seriously speeds up the process of importing audio. When it comes to collaboration, Pro Tools 10 makes sharing sessions easy. Now you can select only the tracks you want and export them as an entirely new session. And if you just want to drop your latest mix onto your iPod, you'll love Pro Tools 10's handy Bounce to iTunes function.
Handy Visual Indicators Have you ever hit play and then scratched your head, wondering why you don't hear anything? Pro Tools 10 makes keeping track of solos, mutes, and more as simple as glancing at the transport. What's more, the new Bus Interrogation window lets you trace the complete signal path of any sound source, making it much easier to collaborate with other engineers or to jump back into a project you haven't touched in months.

However, AAX plug-ins feature major advantages, including updated code and an architecture that supports 64-bit processing — paving the road for truly impressive developments to come. Close

Also, boxed full versions of Pro Tools (not upgrades) come with an iLok. Therefore, you'll only need to buy an iLok if a) you own one, but it's full; b) you don't own one and are buying an electronic version; or c) you don't own one and are buying an upgrade. Close
