"Back in March you had a Technical Tip Of The Day that was about using disk optimization software like Norton Utilities. I wanted to know if using the disk defragmenter and disk diagnostic programs that are included with Windows '95 will be as effective as a separate software package. Thank you for your help."

Clay Stahlka, one of Sweetwater's PC gurus replies, "Typically, there is little difference in the end result regardless (or irregardless, depending on how you were brought up) of the utility used in defragging the disk. None of them (repeat NONE) are capable of completely defragmenting a disk. This is why they are usually referred to as "optimization utilities." They just make the best of what can be done. The only way to completely eliminate fragmentation is to format the disk and reload the files into consecutive blocks. The reason for this is that there are many "hidden" or read-only data blocks that cannot be rewritten and reorganized during defragging. Therefore, disorganization will always exist to some degree even immediately after defragmentation or optimization."
