SCSI Through A Serial Port?
12/18/1997

From inSync reader Besart H:

"I have an NEC laptop computer with an external CD-ROM drive hooked up to it through a PCM-CIA slot connection. Now, this CD-ROM drive doesn't work without the computer because the laptop has the driver for it and runs it (the CD-ROM) through this PCM-CIA card.

Is it possible for me to somehow connect a Roland S-760 to the computer and that way get through to the CD-ROM drive? I have had this idea of connecting my S-760 from its SCSI to the computer through the serial port, but I haven't had the cable and therefore have never tried it out. In case it works, what kind of a cable do I need for it?"

Thanks for your question, Besart! Unfortunately, we can't give you the answer you want to hear on this one!

  1. There is no way we know of to interface a SCSI bus to a PC serial port.

  2. Even if you could interface SCSI to serial, the CD-ROM would not be accessible by the sampler.

The only possibility: If the CD-ROM drive is SCSI-based (which we doubt), you could take it off the computer and use it directly with the sampler. Sorry!
