b>Q: A friend told me that I should not use a standard guitar cable to connect my amp head to my speaker cabinet. Is this true?
A: Although guitar players have been doing this for ages, it's still not right! Guitar cables are not speaker cables. You'll find that, although they may look similar, speaker cables are thicker and not shielded. And remember that, with cable gauges, lower numbers mean heftier cables, so a 16-gauge cable is thicker and more heavy duty than an 18-gauge wire (weird, huh?). Always use the heaviest gauge speaker wiring you can, and never go below 18 gauge or you might end up damaging your rig. In general, when you buy an amp head and cabinet, you'll get the correct speaker cable (but not always).
